Business and Non-Profit Development Work

There is often a fine line between for-profit and non-profit work. In fact the non-profit sector draws on some of the same skills as the for-profit sector, with the difference often being that taxation is paid by one entity but not the other.  Job titles also have a wide range: business development lead, program manager, national director, project manager, and many others.

This week’s upload includes hundreds of available positions across such varied industries as artificial intelligence, healthcare consulting, international legal advocacy, student services, childhood diseases and financial services, to name only a few.

Every enterprise requires development: what skills and expertise might you bring to their development mission?  Have you opened your mind to the opportunities available?

Here are a few examples to get you started.

A New Start for Space Careers

The seemingly non-stop launches of rockets from SpaceX, the venerable US start-up, reminds us that we are in new era for space exploration.  Importantly, this is accelerating the volume, level and types of employment available.  Whether in deep space research, travel, interstellar mining, space services (3D printing in space?), autonomous aerospace vehicles, or dozens of other applications, existing and imagined, the depth and breadth of opportunities in the private sector are unprecedented.

And we are only at the beginning.

For a more technical view of our space future, consider this presentation by NASA to understand the emerging spectrum of space activities.  Or to find out news on the start-up market for space ventures, and research potential employers, check out CB Insights to start tracking market participants.

Then look up our space jobs this week with specialities ranging from engineering and planning to communications, post-doctoral research and national security positions.  Open positions are mostly in STEM–but as companies are formed to pursue these challenges there will be more opportunities for all areas of domain expertise.

Happy travels.

International career opportunities for PhDs have traditionally been located within NGOs, multilateral organization and multinational corporations. After the Storm, Start-Ups Abound

We believe that start-up ventures will continue to emerge–and thrive–in the face of the current pandemic.  In part this is because the start-up ecosystem is responding to problems that need to be solved, but also that the current environment offers significant amounts of private investment capital to entrepreneurs.

In referring to “start-ups” we do not mean an entrepreneur working out of her garage, but rather ventures with less than 10 years of operating history and often at the intersection of innovation and technology.  As we have noted in a previous post, many start-ups are a perfect environment for PhDs: such ventures harness advanced level research and project management skills while offering individuals potentially more room for personal growth within a fast-moving environment.

This week’s upload of start-up ventures is heavy in the bio-sciences and biotech but also includes fields such as financial and legal services, healthcare, and consumer product development.  A trove of opportunities is available on our SmartJobs site, so log in and learn more.

Finally, stay positive.

Statistics, Human Behavior and Jobs

Adept at statistical methods?  Data analysis?  Can you bring insights to decision-making and human behavior? Answer “yes” to any of these questions and you are likely to find a broad set of career opportunities, from policy research to pet products.

A quick glance through the job descriptions of data science work (which we have done) requires, at minimum, proficiency with certain statistical packages and research methods.  PhD holders are often preferred candidates; a doctorate is often a required qualification.  At the moment we are seeing a particularly large demand from international development enterprises, technology ventures (Spotify, Chewy, Disney Streaming…) policy think tanks, NGOs, financial companies and health sciences. The range of disciplines and domain knowledge needed is vast.

If you haven’t thought about applying your research and statistical knowledge to new fields of work outside of academia, now would be a good time.
