This week we went a bit overboard on data science jobs.  But it wasn’t difficult to accomplish.  Data is at the center of many industries and draws upon the type of higher order analytical, critical thinking, research design and statistical skills that many PhDs and graduate students use every day.  Data science is also a catch-all category and includes other areas such as market and behavioral research, and is part of many job descriptions.

It should come as no surprise that in our data-centric world there is a plethora of jobs available for research-savvy PhDs and those with advanced degrees across many academic disciplines.  According to the US Bureau of Labor, demand for computational and information science jobs will grow by 19% through 2026.  LinkedIn has identified the filed as “Jobs of Tomorrow”, where, outside of expert data scientists, some knowledge of data science will be an essential part of work for large part of the workforce.

How we eat. What we eat. Where we eat.  This may not seem like a jumping off point for PhD appropriate careers, but the food sector (broadly defined) is at the center of scientific and commercial innovation.

Food and agricultural enterprises–public and private–are also large employers.  In the US alone, the food and beverage industry exceeds $1.5 trillion annually and employs millions.  When Ark Investment, a fund management firm, identified its view on leading “disruptive innovations” in a recent 2020 report, food delivery services (some by drone) and the companies that run them (Uber, Deliveroo, Meituan in China) were front and center.  Leading venture capital funds are doing significant investment in food innovation and employing thousands of scientists.  Ethical foods, the ability to feed the planet more efficiently, and food safety are just a few other areas gaining attention and investment.  And these ventures require highly trained people.

The number of new ventures requiring people with skills to assess, predict and enhance human behavior continues to multiply.  From technology companies and NGOs focused on climate change, to  health care institutions and government agencies, understanding human behavior has become a critical and highly employable skill that draws from a wide range of STEM, Humanities and Social Science disciplines. A quick glance at LinkedIn’s job board yields over 7,000 jobs with a “behavioral science” description, many of which requiring advanced degree-level skills.
